One Person in Hospital after Coffee Shop Fire

Serangoon Coffee Shop Fire

One person was taken to hospital after a fire at a coffee shop at Serangoon Central Drive in the early hours of Saturday morning.

About 20 people self-evacuated before The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at the scene, and one person was later taken to Singapore General Hospital due to smoke inhalation. Footage of the incident shared on TikTok showed flames rising several stories up ducting on the side of a building. The SCDF was alerted to the fire at about 1.20am and firefighters extinguished the blaze with a water jet. The said SCDF in response to a CNA query:

“The fire involved the kitchen exhaust ducting of a coffee shop on the first floor of the building”

There continues to be fire incidents involving the mechanical exhaust ventilation systems of commercial kitchens. As seen in this case, these high-intensity fires move and spread rapidly, are difficult to extinguish, and are susceptible to remote re-ignition and break-out. Systems that are not periodically inspected, maintained or cleaned will be subject to a build-up of oil, grease and other inflammable materials within the duct, filters, gutters, and on the internal surfaces of the hood.

Minimising Grease Build-up at the Source

Grease and oil build-up starts at the metal kitchen grease filters before being extracted into the rest of the mechanical extraction system (hood, ducting, fan and eventually, the roof).

Kitchen grease filters are one of the first lines of defense for kitchen safety, yet at best, they only capture between 20-40% of airborne grease, leading to a hazardous build-up that needs to be cleaned off on a regular basis in order to stay compliant and covered by insurance. It’s an ongoing problem that needed an easy and cost-effective solution.

Shepherd Filters offer an effective kitchen exhaust grease management system that reduces the need for costly filter and kitchen duct cleaning.

Your savings will begin immediately as there is significantly less grease on filter frames and entering the kitchen exhaust system, reducing your filter cleaning costs:
